The stops
Three unique places along the route across Lake Akkajaure
DEPARTURE POINT
Rijtjem (Ritsem)
Rijtjem lies right on the border of Laponia. East of the stream Rijtjemjåhkå you enter the UNESCO World Heritage area and Stora Sjöfallet/Stuor Muorkke National Park. The village is the home settlement of the Unna tjerusj Sami and a vital hub for several Sami communities — from here trails lead to Badjelánndaleden and Nordkalottleden. The village has been profoundly affected by hydroelectric development; the lake has been regulated four times, forcing the community to move higher each time.
MIDDLE STOP
Änonjálmme / Áhkká
The goddess of the fells. Áhkká rises steeply from the lake with its thirteen peaks, the highest reaching 2,015 metres. Glaciers nestle near the summits, surrounded by vast moraine fields. From Änonjálmme it is a short walk to STF Áhkkastugan — the gateway to Badjelánndaleden and Sarek.
END POINT
Vájsáluokta
The southern shore of Lake Akkajaure, deep within UNESCO World Heritage Laponia. Vájsáluokta is the trailhead for Padjelantaleden — one of Sweden's most scenic long-distance routes — leading south through Padjelanta National Park toward Kvikkjokk.
